A combined theoretical/experimental approach to the dynamic characterization of viscoelastic materials
Article Abstract:
The analysis of a mathematical model of a viscoelastic bar that is subjected to variable displacement boundary conditions is given. The purpose of the study is to validate a set of formulas used in describing the mechanical limits of material testing equipment used in the study. The influence of inertia for storage modulus and loss factor is also studied. The bar is mathematically simulated as having one-dimensional axial longitudinal motion. Results show that the length of the bar and the driving frequency have a greater influence on the inertia correction term than the density. Based on this observation, a comparison between the theoretical and computed complex modulus show that the theoretical value is smaller.

Multiaxial nonlinear viscoelastic characterization and modeling of a structural adhesive
Article Abstract:
Many polymeric materials, such as structural adhesives, show nonlinear behaviour, and several models have been developed to capture the wide range of nolinear responses. During tests on a bisphenol A expoxy it was found that dilational effects along were not sufficient to describe the response, therefor a free volume approach was modified to incorporate distortional effects in the material's inherent time scale. The modified free volume theory could accurately predict local displacement fields.

Transverse-isotropic elastic and viscoelastic solids
Article Abstract:
Finite-strain theories for transversely isotropic elastic and viscoelastic solids are derived from a unique set of invariants whose gradients produce strain fields. Shear-free and simple shearing deformations are used to illustrate the constitutive theory.
