A pain in the neck
Article Abstract:
UK insurers paid out some 600 million pounds sterling for whiplash injuries following car accidents in 1999, more than double the amount in 1989. To aid car manufacturers in their quest for safer cars, two rear impact dummies are being developed in Europe. The first is an Anglo-Dutch project between Ogle TNO Safety Products and the crash dummy subsidiary of TNO, the Dutch national technology lab. The second project is being developed jointly by Volvo, Saab, Autoliv and the crash safety division of Gothenburg's Chalmers University.

Article Abstract:
The environmental benefits of nuclear fusion are encouraging engineers and scientists to continue researching new laser technologies to replace traditional tokamak magnetic doughnuts, such as the Joint European Torus. Among such lasers currently in development are the Rutherford Appleton laser, which is Europe's largest krypton fluoride laser, and the National Ignition Facility glass lasers of the Lawrence Livermore National Lab.
