A test for the Whitehorse Mining Initiative
Article Abstract:
The Canadian Nature Federation advised the BHP diamond mine environmental assessment panel that BHP Diamond Inc.'s Yellowknife project and the government's Slave West Kitikmeot regional study are tests of the Whitehorse Mining Initiative principles. Canada could become the leader in adopting a more ecologically sustainable approach to mining if the accord is implemented.

Feds get mixed grades in annual wilderness report card
Article Abstract:
The federal government has obtained a grade of A in the recent World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) 1996-97 Endangered Spaces Progress Report because of protecting more than 60,000 sq. km. of wilderness lands. However, the federal government was rated poor for not developing marine protected areas.

CNF welcomes New Arctic National Park
Article Abstract:
Sirmilik National Park, Canada, came into existence on August 12, 1999. The park consists of 22,240 square kilometers of high sea cliffs, glaciers and mountains. The Inuit people have been involved in the preservation of this area.
