A thermodynamic approach for modeling partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds on atmospheric particulate matter: humidity effects
Article Abstract:
Hydrophobic compounds of polar aerosols exhibited the strongest impact of humidity on partitioning. Outdoor environmental chambers were used to determine the impact of humidity on the gas/partitioning of various kinds of semivolatile organic compounds within the organic strata of wood soot, diesel soot and secondary aerosols. Outdoor teflon film chambers showed experimental partitioning coefficients Kpr for various semivolatile organic compounds while theoretical Kp values were determined via activity coefficients and vapor pressures.

Benz(a)anthracene photodegradation in the presence of known organic constituents of atmospheric aerosols
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to assess the effects of organic compounds in atmospheric particulate matter on benz(a)anthracene photodegradation by using a photochemical turntable reactor. Results showed that 9,10-anthraquinone, xanthone, 2-furaldehyde, 2,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone, 2-acetylfuran and furfuryl alcohol accelerates benz(a)anthracene decay, but was inhibited by 7-benzanthrone. The mechanisms determining photodegradation rate of benz(a)anthracene are discussed.

Products of Benz(a)anthracene photodegredation in the presence of known organic constituents of atmospheric aerosols
Article Abstract:
A research in organic aerosol photochemistry studied the products formed from the photodegradation of benz[a]anthracene in the presence of 9,10-anthraquinone, 9-xanthone and vanillin. Irradiation of these substances were done in toluene, benzene and benzene-d6 medium and analyzed using GCMS, FTIR and NMR. Results showed a high concentration of 7,12-benz[a]anthracenedione among the 13 tentatively identified products of benz[a]anthracene photodegradation.
