New research reveals how contaminants can be "locked" into soil
Article Abstract:
Scientists are studying the chemical reactions involved in bound residues, or the binding of contaminants to the soil. One group is headed by Jean-Marc Bollag, director of the Center for Bioremediation and Detoxification at Pennsylvania State University. Bollag's team investigated the permanence of the binding process and the effects of nonbiological catalysts and enzymes. Nuclear magnetic resonance revealed bound residues were characterized by the covalent bonding of the pesticides to humus.
