Fate and distribution of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates in the littoral environment
Article Abstract:
The fate and behavior of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS), which were used as an anionic surfactant in the manufacture of detergents, in a shallow coastal zone adjoining the Bay of Cadiz in Spain were investigated. Intense biodegradation, sorption and settling of material in suspension have caused LAS to demonstrate a nonconservative behavior. Strong sorption at the water-atmosphere interface also reveals the surfactant character of LAS.

Biodegradation of coproducts of commercial linear alkylbenzene sulfonate
Article Abstract:
The results of biodegradation of coproducts of commercial linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), dialkyltetratlin sulfonate (DATS) and single methyl-branched isomers (iso-LAS) of LAS reveal mineralization of the LAS coproducts in simulated receiving water and soil environments. DATS and iso-LAS were found to mineralize at rates similar to that of sulfophenyl carboxylate (SPC) intermediates of a standard LAS.
