Biggest deep quakes may need help
Article Abstract:
Seismologists need to revise the mechanism of transformational faulting since it fails to consider earthquakes that occur 400 kilometers below the Earth's surface. The mechanism, which works well in laboratory experiments, failed to explain the rupture caused by the 8.3 quake that struck Bolivia in Jun. 1994.

Geophysicists ponder ancient chills and elusive quakes
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the spring American Geophysical Union meeting presented studies on the so-called silent earthquakes that occur over several days. Another presentation covered a climate modeling study that estimated modest cooling in the tropics during the last ice age.

Seismologists learn the language of quakes
Article Abstract:
Recent research reveals that an earthquake on one fault can transfer stress to or relieve stress from another fault miles away. Mathematical models accurately predicted slippage on neighboring faults following the 7.4 quake near Landers, CA, in 1992.
