Bioremediation of an experimental oil spill on the shoreline of Delaware Bay
Article Abstract:
An experimental oil spill on the shoreline of Delaware Bay was conducted to determine if bioremediation with inorganic mineral nutrients and/or microbial inoculation enhanced the removal of crude oil contaminating a sandy beach and to calculate intrinsic and enhanced biodegradation rates. It was noted that significant hydrocarbon biodegradation occurred in untreated plots. Significant differences were observed in the biodegradation rates of total alkane and total aromatic hydrocarbons between treated and untreated plots. There were no significant differences between plots treated with nutrients alone and plots treated with nutrients and the indigenous inoculum. First-order rate constants for the disappearance of alkanes and PAHs showed loss patterns typical of biodegradation.

Development of two biomass control strategies for extended, stable operation of highly efficient biofilters with high toluene loadings
Article Abstract:
A sustained efficiency rate for toluene removal of more than 99% was achieved using two biomass control strategies for stable, long-term, continuous operation of highly efficient biofilters with high toluene loadings. Since the prevention of plugging due to accumulating biomass is important for avoiding biofilter failure, backwashing with medium fluidization was conducted. It was found to be highly effective in preventing accumulation of excess biomass.

Parameter estimation in biofilter systems
Article Abstract:
Researchers from the Ford Research Laboratory, U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory and the University of Cincinnati measured the unknown parameters of a mathematical biodegradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) model in a gas phase trickle-bed biofilter using results from a two-reactor pilot-scale system treating the VOC diethyl ether.
