Biotransformation of the cyanobacterial hepatotoxin microcystin-LR, as determined by HPLC and protein phosphatase bioassay
Article Abstract:
The effect of the introduction of purified microcystin-LR (MLCR) on a heterotrophic microbial community obtained from sewage effluent was examined using high-performance liquid chromatography. Results revealed that MLCR concentration diminished after a 10-day incubation period and that its heptapetide ring and Adda group has been modified. Bacterial counts in effluent with and without MLCR did not differ. In addition, MLCR products were not observed to have inhibited protein phosphatase activity.

Carbazole degradation by Pseudomonas sp. LD2: metabolic characteristics and the identification of some metabolites
Article Abstract:
The metabolic characteristics of Pseudomonas sp. LD2, a carbazole-degrading bacterium, were studied. It was shown that LD2 used carbazole as its exclusive source of carbon, nitrogen and energy. When grown in a nitrogen-free mineral medium with carbazole, 43% of the isolate LD2 was recovered as CO2 after two days incubation. A total of 10 nitrogen-containing metabolites were detected in acidified LD2 extracts.
