Bits in pieces
Article Abstract:
Recycling of unwanted cathode ray tubes (CRTs), computers and their components is becoming a lucrative proposition as one million computers are expected to be disposed of during 1996. A new CRT recycling technology involves wet crushing of the tubes, with the toxic coating separating out as sludge. Processes for treating sludge include the use of plant fiber as a selective filter, and use of micro-organisms to selectively digest metals. Telephones and computer terminals are other equipment being recycled.

Problems solved
Article Abstract:
Manufacturing software developers are coming up with solutions to bottlenecks which remain even after using computer-aided-design/computer-aided manufacturing systems. Deneb Solutions has introduced the Virtual NC package which emulates the computer numerical control machine and its controller to allow users to reduce the proving out of NC programs from several hours to one hour. Meanwhile, C3 Manufacturing Systems Software has developed a process planning software.

The price is right
Article Abstract:
Rapid prototyping (RP) technology allows a component or product designer to convert CAD data into a physical model. However, early systems were costly and produced crude models that had very simple applications. Among such technologies was Helisys Inc.'s Laminated Object Manufacturing process, where paper models were made from laser-cut shapes. Recent and more inexpensive RP products include the JP System 5 by Utah University and Scroff Development.
