Call it beetle guard: Bug-based coating could neutralize toxins
Article Abstract:
Chemical engineers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology have devised a material, which uses the African Stenocara beetle's action of using its wings to capture vapor molecules to herd them into a droplet that rolls into its mouth, leading to a range of products that manhandle fluids. The researchers are trying to implant compounds in the runoff channels that could neutralize chemical and biological agents as they are repelled by military clothing or that could kill bacteria collected on hospital surfaces.
