Carbon monoxide as a tracer for assessing exposures to particulate matter in wood and gas cookstove households of Highland Guatemala
Article Abstract:
Two studies measured passive diffusion stain-tube carbon monoxide (CO) and kitchen-area 22-h gravimetric PM(2.5) concentrations in homes that had improved wood and open fire cookstoves, with the result that CO proved to be a good proxy for PM(2.5) in homes that used either open fires or planchas but not for the use of gas stoves. The study was conducted by the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Yale University School of Medicine, the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, University of California-Berkeley, the Division of Nutrition, National Institute of Public Health, Mexico, and the Institute for Survey Research, Temple University.
