Case study of organochlorine pesticides in the indoor air of a home
Article Abstract:
Aldrin and dieldrin were used as insecticides from the 1950s to the 1970s. The EPA banned their use except for termite control in 1974 and it was not until 1987 when their usage as a termiticide was included in the ban. In a study of the spatial distribution of these termiticides between Sep. 1987 and Apr. 1995, high concentrations were measured at the places where they had been applied particularly in the basement. Aldrin concentrations decreased over the study period but dieldrin levels remained unchanged. Manipulating basement air pressure stopped further increases in the concentrations of both termiticides.

Global mass balance for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans
Article Abstract:
Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) are major environmental pollutants emitted from the combustion of chlorinated waste from various sources. The deposition of PCDD/F from the atmosphere is toxic to humans and animals. However, current data on atmospheric depositional fluxes of PCDD/F do not give accurate worldwide deposition fluxes. Estimation of atmospheric deposition using soil samples reveals that actual global deposition is roughly four times greater than annual emissions, suggesting that known PCDD/F sources are not well-characterized.

Organic pollutant accumulation in vegetation
Article Abstract:
Studies on the accumulation of organic pollutants by vegetation have been conducted to determine the importance of vegetation as a pollutant sink. Empirical models were used to examine the pathways through which organic pollutants enter vegetation. Results showed that vegetation determines sources of organic pollutants and provides pollutant contamination patterns.
