Cells count proteins to keep their telomeres in line
Article Abstract:
Molecular biologist David Shore and colleagues have gained new insight into the process by which cells restore telomeres, the ends of the DNA strands of the dividing sections. Yeast chromosome cells appear to count molecules of the protein Rap1 that bind to the telomeres.

Finding new drugs to treat stroke
Article Abstract:
A large clinical trial revealed that the drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) can increase the percentage of stroke victims who show no loss of function by 50% The drug must be taken within 3 hours of the stroke. Other experimental stoke drugs are discussed.

Bisexual fruit flies point to brain courtship centers
Article Abstract:
Neurogeneticist Ralph Greenspan and his team have identified two areas of the brain that seem to determine how male fruit flies choose mates. They also found that they can produce a bisexual male by imposing the female developmental pattern on those two areas.
