Changing patterns of innovation in a process-dominated industry
Article Abstract:
A diverse group of organizations has mediated innovation in the downstream sectors of the petrochemical industry, namely, refining and organic chemical production, fitting the cyclical pattern of the Abernathy-Utterback model. In the upstream sectors comprising the exploration and extraction of oil and gas, on the other hand, there is a varied group of contributors but the pace of innovation does not seem to fit cyclical models from manufacturing industries. A potential model for other industries where innovation must be progressive is a continuous innovation pattern which has emerged in the pharmaceutical industry since 1980.
