Chemical factors influencing colloid-facilitated transport of contaminants in porous media
Article Abstract:
A study of the effects of colloids on the transport of two strongly sorbing solutes, nickel and phenanthrene, through sand-packed columns revealed that only some demonstrated enhancement of contaminant transport. Two types of experiments were conducted to highlight the effects of colloids on contaminant transport, namely, with four porous media and two strongly sorbing contaminants. It was found that only when the aqueous chemistry conditions favor a lower deposition efficiency can sorbing colloids substantially enhance transport in a strongly sorbing porous medium.

Colloid deposition dynamics in flow through porous media: role of electrolyte concentration
Article Abstract:
The role of colloids in groundwater contaminant transport was determined by examining the influence of solution ionic strength and counterion valence on the behavior of colloid deposition in granular porous media. Values were obtained using packed-bed column experiments and were analyzed based on their implications to colloidal transport and mobilization in aqueous media.
