Contamination of pike and sediment from the Kymijoki River by PCDEs, PCDDs, and PCDFs: contents and patterns compared to pike and sediment from the Bothnian Bay and seals from Lake Saimaa
Article Abstract:
Sediment and pike from Kymijoki River and Bothnian Bay exhibited the same contents of polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDE), 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans and non-ortho-substituted polychlorinated biphenyls as the sediment from four ringed seals from Lake Saimaa and one ringed seal from Lake Baikal. Measurement of the concentration of these compounds in chlorophenol formulation revealed the same concentration as that of PCDE congeners, with higher accumulation in Kymijoki River sediments.

Polychlorinated diphenyl sulfides: preparation of model compounds, chromatography, mass spectometry, NMR and environmental analysis
Article Abstract:
Research has investigated the structure of model compounds of polychlorinated diphenyl sulfides (PCDPS) to assist environmental analysis of potentially harmful waste gases. Mass spectrometry revealed the extent of chlorination and H NMR spectroscopy established isomer structure. Environmental samples of gases from a waste incinerator and effluent from pulp mills were compared with the model compound. The structural similarity of PCDPSs with polychlorinated diphenyl ethers suggets they are environmentally detrimental.

Identification and level estimation of aromatic coeluates of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in pulp mill products and wastes
Article Abstract:
The analysis of pulp mill products and wastes to structurally identify planar aromatic chloro compounds with the inclusion of a defoamer used in the production of the pulp is discussed. C4-polychlorophenanthrenes were identified and measured in biosludge, effluent and pulp samples of five pulp mills and in incubated mussels in a recipient watercourse of pulp and paper mills. Numerous compounds, chlorinated and otherwise, were found in the dioxine fraction of the biosludge.
