Dioxin emissions from EDC/VCM plants
Article Abstract:
The production of ethylene dichloride (EDC) and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) represents a serious threat to all forms of life, according to a report from Greenpeace, which looks at nine case studies of emissions from four EDC/VCM units in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. The polyvinyl chloride (PVC) industry, which uses EDC/VCM, disputes Greenpeace's findings, but Greenpeace is calling for measures including the elimination of procedures and products using organochlorines and the assessment of organochlorine emissions from PVC facilities. The four sites in the report are discussed in detail.

Degradation of polydimethylsiloxanes (silicones) as influenced by clay minerals
Article Abstract:
Degradation rates of C-labeled poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) in soil could be determined by such factors as clay content and clay type. Conditions to which the soil was subjected include 22 degree Centigrade and 32% relative humidity, sequential extraction and performance size chromatography (HPSEC). All of the clays experimented on were found to be catalysts for degradation with kaolinite, beidellite and nontronite as the most active and geothite and allophane as the least active. Moreover, PDMS degradation products adhered more closely to geothite and smectites.

Quantification of polymer interactions in bacterial adhesion
Article Abstract:
An extension of the DLVO-AB model was adapted in an attempt to provide researchers an efficient means of quantifying the interaction of bacterial polymers with solid surfaces. Results revealed that low adherence of bacterial strains tend induce repulsion, while optimal adsorption may lead to surface attraction. It was also found that repulsion may arise as a result of the inability of cells to compress their envelopes, thereby limiting the magnitude of van der Waals force.
