Article Abstract:
Comments on a study on a slope failure in a lacustrine deposit near Cleveland that contained slickensides. Although the failure mechanism of soils containing slickensides has yet to be fully understood, it is possible to make allowances for reduced strengths if engineers are aware of the possible presence of slickensides. Slickensides are also present in a lacustrine deposit near Superior, WI, but are absent in sites at Toledo and Fremont, OH, and at Sault St Marie, MI.

Closure by Akram N. Alshawabkeh, associate member, ASCE
Article Abstract:
A closure to comments on a study on the electrokinetic extraction of lead from fine-grained soils is presented. It should be stressed that the derivations made using the cross-sectional area and permissible flow area are valid since a continuum approach was employed. Furthermore, the assumption of negligible surface conductance should not be disputed in the case of spiked kaolinite, unlike in the case of active clays which have low ionic strength pore fluid.

Defects in soft clays: a challenge to site characterization for stability analysis
Article Abstract:
Comments on a study on the importance of minor geologic details concerning the stability of slopes and dams are presented. These details include the weak seams in sedimentary deposits of clay and fissures in relation to shearing resistance and residual strength. These details can be studied if the investigator can visualize the possible modes of failure associated with the geology of the site.
