Suspecting that the Aug. '99 Atlantic hurricane Dennis would mimic other rapid-intensification storms such as Opal and Andrew, a research plane from MacDill Air Force Base, FL, crossed Dennis's eye four times, sending out research instruments and analyzing the storm from the inside out.

Critics claim that the National Research Council's estimates of future fuel economy for vehicles are not ambitious enough. An increase in fuel economy could cost $500 to $2,500 per car, thereby possibly discouraging consumers from buying cars.
