Interviews are presented with a diverse range of Japanese scientists: molecular biologist Tadatsugu Taniguchi, science advisor Jiro Kondo, biologist Yasutomi Nishizuka, physicists Elichi Goto, Leo Esaki and Yoichiro Suzuki, geneticist Hiroto Okayama and administrator Hiroyoshi Rangu.

Japanese academics bemoan the cost of years of neglect
Article Abstract:
Japanese researchers blame the country's poor performance in basic research on the shortage of research grants and technicians, poorly maintained facilities, rigid bureaucracy, geographic isolation and lack of opportunity. Plans to improve conditions are discussed.

Japan has a reputation for technical wizardry, but in reality its reputation for scientific successes is spotty. Some past failures of both large and small scientific project projects are reviewed and plans for the future are discussed.
