Charleston, South Carolina is one of a few engineering locations that is prone to severe earthquakes and hurricanes. The design of the Center for Advanced Medicine of the University of South Carolina features glass curtain walls that could withstand hurricane force winds and its structural system consists of concrete slabs on composite metal deck to minimize the seismic loading on the frame.

The High-Main Street Bridge had to be replaced and widened after 90 years of service to accommodate higher vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The project employed spliced, precast, and posttensioned concrete girder construction.
