EFfects of pH on heavy metal sorption on mineral apatite
Article Abstract:
The metal sorption mechanism by mineral apatite and metal-apatite reaction products can be greatly influenced by the pH condition of heavy metal solutions. This was gleaned from an investigation of the sorption of aqueous Pb, Cd and Zn onto a mineral apatite from North Carolina in relation to a wide range of pH. Of particular concern were the effects of pH on solid-phase precipitation. Results proved the importance of alternative sorption mechanisms other than precipitation of the crystalline phases in reducing Cd and Zn concentrations. It was found that removal of Cd and Zn was pH dependent, while removal of Pb was not.

Iodide retention by metal sulfide surfaces: cinnabar and chalcocite
Article Abstract:
Iodide is a component of radioactive waste and it is easily transported into the biosphere. To determine the mechanism by which this material enters the atmosphere, iodide sorption experiments were performed, with cinnabar and chalcocite as the sorbents of iodide. Potentiometric titrations indicated that iodide sorbs strongly to both cinnabar and chalcocite, particularly between pH 4 and pH 5. The sorption behavior of iodide was attributed to exchange by hydroxyls attached to metal surface sites on cinnabar and chalcocite.
