Effects of dissolved oxygen and light exposure on determination of K(sub OC) values for PAHs using fluorescence quenching
Article Abstract:
A study aimed at investigating the decay over time of the fluorescence of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is presented. It is believed that the phenomenon brings about the overestimation of PAH-humic binding coefficients as determined by fluorescence quenching. Fluorescence quenching experiments were performed under conditions that ensured minimal exposure of the samples to UV radiation and dissolved oxygen. The compounds utilized in the experiments were phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, triphylene, and a soil humic acid. All four compounds exhibited UV radiation-induced decays.

Gas-particle partitioning of PCBs and PAHs in the Chicago urban and adjacent coastal atmosphere: states of equilibrium
Article Abstract:
Results from the gas-particle partitioning of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the urban Chicago and the adjacent southern Lake Michigan atmosphere reveal that the PAHs and PCBs in the areas are at equilibrium. The slopes of the regressions of log Kp against the subcooled liquid vapor pressure from samples continental background origin are among the smallest measured, -0.70 to -0.53 and -0.16 to -0.56 for PAHs and PCBs, respectively. The figures indicate sufficient atmospheric residence times to reach equilibrium.

Article Abstract:
Researchers Gustafson and Dickhut argue that their use of the the gas partitioning model and their subsequent claim that the slope of the model is equal to unity due to the difference between the enthalpies of desorption and vaporization within a compound class remains nearly constant, a fact that was manifest in the results which showed no deviations due to non-thermodynamic factors. As to the relative humidity issue, the experiment took the factor into account as manifest in the tests for experimental artifact effects on the measurements.
