Estimating diffusion coefficients in low-permeability porous media using a macropore column
Article Abstract:
Investigations into the diffusion coefficients of tritiated water, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene and tetrachloroethane were conducted using a specially constructed macropore column. Transportation of the solutes were effected through the central core by convection and hydrodynamic diffusion and through the annulus by radial diffusion. The movement of the solutes through the column was shown to follow the model with retarded diffusion, with the effective tortuosity factor of the material computed to have an average value of 5.1.

Researchers investigated terpene oxidation in the atmosphere. To conduct the study, a chamber was fitted with ultraviolet lights, and means for introducing the terpenes. Low vapor terpenes were the basis of investigation. Constant rates of reactions of OH, NO3 and O3 were determined. The authors speculated that this is the first time constants measurements for IPOH and MVT with OH, NO3, and O3 have been published. The study concludes with a chart showing typical chemical lifetimes in the troposphere for terpenes.
