Partitioning of substituted phenols in liposome-water, biomembrane-water, and octanol-water systems
Article Abstract:
Twenty chloro- and nitrophenols with varied acidities and hydrophobicities were analyzed to assess the effects of pH, ionic strength and compound concentration on the sorption of phenolic compounds to liposomes and to chromatophores. It was found that for many environmentally relevant phenols, the membrane-water partitioning at ambient pH values is substantially affected by the sorption of the phenoxide, not by the partitioning of the neutral species as assumed.
