Pharmaceutical companies focusing on smaller activities are emerging from public sector research (PSR) and the interface between them is increasingly diverse, dynamic and complex. The patterns of knowledge exchange between PSR and industry along with the length of the innovation chain, and the management of intellectual property rights are presented.
