Factors associated with PCB concentrations in Lake Michigan salmonids
Article Abstract:
An analysis of 20 years of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) level data for five species of Lake Michigan fish was conducted to determine how human consumption of contaminated fish may be minimized. The results showed that lake trout and brown trout had relatively high PCB levels, while rainbow trout had the lowest levels. When corrected for the effects of time, location, length and interspecies variability, PCB levels were not correlated with percent lipid content. Manipulating fish stocking practices based on these results may minimize human exposure to PCBs.

Microbial reduction of cobaltIIIEDTA in the presence and absence of manganese(IV) oxide
Article Abstract:
Metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella alga strain BrY enzymatically reduces cobaltIIIEDTA- to CoIIEDTA2- with a 1:1 stoichiometry. Radioactive 60CoIIIEDTA- appeared to have no effect on the reduction of CoIIIEDTA- at concentrations exceeding figures recorded in contaminated environments. The direct reduction of CoIIIEDTA- by microorganisms and geochemical oxidation of CoIIEDTA2- by manganese-(IV) oxides could be important factors in the fate and transport of 60CoIIIEDTA2- in the environment.
