Fatigue damage calculation using the critical plane approach
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the fatigue behavior of materials subjected to constant amplitude proportional loading using the critical plane method yields a set of closed-form solutions that help determine the largest damage parameter and the most critical plane. Expression of the closed-form solutions as functions of the experimentally estimated strains and stresses enables the determination of the damage parameter versus fatigue life curve. Computation of the damage parameter versus fatigue life curve using the maximum shear plane rather than the most critical plane leads to errors in the fatigue life estimates.

A mathematical model competing failure modes in strain cycle fatigue
Article Abstract:
A fatigue failure mechanism is presented that explains that the natural selection of initiation site is based upon the concept that the site displaying the highest local plastic strain is the location where fatigue initiates.
