On the beach
Article Abstract:
A conference to discuss sea hygiene found that 300 million gallons of sewage is pumped daily into the sea around the United Kingdom. Despite this 89% of beaches designated as clean reached quality levels as defined by the European Community. Representatives from Surfers Against Sewage pointed out that there are many health risks from bathing in the sea and called for more public funding. It is estimated that spending 9.5 billion pounds sterling on water cleaning schemes would not achieve high enough standards and therefore would not be worth the investment.
