First genes isolated from a deadly 1918 flu virus
Article Abstract:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has sequenced five genes from a flu virus that killed 20 million people in 1918. Analyzing preserved lung tissue of a soldier, researchers determined that the killer was a type of swine flu, raising the possibility of future epidemics caused by pigs.

FDA panel OKs baboon marrow transplant
Article Abstract:
A scientific panel has recommended FDA approval of a bone marrow transplant from a baboon for AIDS patient Jeff Getty. The procedure is risky, but there is some chance it could improve Getty's immune response. The AIDS virus has no effect on baboon immune cells.

U.S. beefs up CDC's capabilities
