Article Abstract:
The UK played a significant role in the development of the Boeing 777 airliner. The UK intends to provide over $1 billion worth in aerospace supplies and 1,000 guaranteed jobs in the next decade, apart from being one of the airliner's first launch customers. Several aircraft elements have been developed especially for the 777 including the Rolls Royce's Trent 800 engine, the primary flight computers by GEC-Marconi Avionics, the electronic load management and fuel quantity indication systems from Smiths Industries, and the composite honeycomb nose landing gear doors by Short Brothers.

Article Abstract:
Matra Datavision is ranked sixth in the world for workstation based CAD for mechanical applications, and its key product is the Euclid 3-D modelling system. The company believes that industry will move towards solid modelling as the base for all CADCAM work, opening up a previously untapped market. It recently introduced Prelude, a cut down version of the Euclid, athough it will only be available in th US, where there is a significant market. The company's systems are installed at Renault and Aerospatiale, Fromatome, and users in the UK include GEC Telecoms and Dowty.

Article Abstract:
The purchasing function is no longer considered as a separate and distinct process in a business enterprise but rather a potential source of significant improvements. Companies are now seeking partnerships with their suppliers. The role of purchasing managers is being enhanced to include other responsibilities such as minimizing inventories and net cash outflows, ensuring rapid reaction to change, improving supplier flexibility and capitalizing on innovation in product, process and service.
