Gas exchange of hexachlorocyclohexane in the Great Lakes
Article Abstract:
Research has investigated the direction and rate of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) or Lindane gas exchange between air and water in Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. The project aimed to facilitate monthly predictions of HCH gas flux. Air and water samples were collected in June, 1989 and August, 1990. A fugacity gradient established an air to water flux direction during periods of high air concentration and low surface water temperatures. Higher water temperatures during summer produced short periods of volatility.

Snow scavenging of polychlorinated biphenyls and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Minnesota
Article Abstract:
The concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in both snow and rain water samples were correlated with PCB and PAH readings in air samples to study atmospheric scavenging of both pollutants. PCB and PAH concentrations were shown to highest in the snow samples, which shows atmospheric scavenging to be dependent on the particle phase of the pollutant. Air scavenging of the pollutants were shown to be effective only on pollutants with low molecular weight.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in air at an urban and a rural site near Lake Michigan
Article Abstract:
Ambient air concentrations in an urban and a rural site near Lake Michigan were measured to determine the deposition of polychlorinated biphenyls and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to the Great Lakes. The Junge-Pankow model was used to estimate the degree of concentration and distribution of the pollutants. The average and theoretical estimates of the fractions are presented.
