Genetic engineering: the frontier of bioremediation
Article Abstract:
Bioremediation of contaminated cites offers many cost-reduction benefits. Microorganisms can transform toxic chemicals into less toxic chemicals. However, without fully understanding the processes involved, such processes might fail to function. Genetic engineering can improve the efficiency of these microbes. Yet, some microbes need additional chemicals to perform a task. Not just the functioning of the microbe is poorly understood. Hydrology, and other geological properties of a location must be considered. The authors have experimented with strains of Pseudomonas putida to determine their ability to decompose toluene.

Competition for hydrogen within a chlorinated solvent dehalogenating anaerobic mixed culture
Article Abstract:
Investigations into the dehalogenating activity in a benzoate-acclimated dehalogenating methanogenic mixed culture showed that competition for hydrogen is the limiting factor for the dehalogenation process. Dehalogenators were shown to compete with methanogens as well as homoacetogens when the hydrogen level was maintained between 2nM to 11nM, as seen in both batch and continuously-fed reactors.
