Midwest Floods of 1993: St. Charles experience
Article Abstract:
The flooding of St. Charles County in 1993 has afforded it an opportunity to scrutinize its disaster-response potentials, and to devise improved floodplain management policies. The county has responded to the 1993 floods by assessing the damage to structures, acquisition of endangered structures, and reviewing its floodplain policies. The county has focused on public awareness of flood risk and the elevation of structures on the floodplains. It has made the creation of open spaces within the floodway mandatory for the developers of new subdivisions.

Damming the Yangtze
Article Abstract:
The Three Gorges Dam, a much-criticized megaproject being built on the Yangtze River, is being extolled by the Chinese government as a way to prevent future floods which have proven very destructive to life and property in the past. The worst flooding in the Yangtze River Valley since 1954 claimed more than $24 billion in damages to property and affected the lives of tens of millions of people. However, critics assert that the project poses unacceptable risks to the environment and would contribute very little in reducing floods.
