Article Abstract:

Research involving recombinant DNA, which took place in the 1970s is described, along with the expectations that accompanied it. It was thought at the time that gene therapy would soon be a reality. The example illustrates why it is difficult to justify specific research on the basis of economic factors, such as reducing health care costs. Meanwhile, the field of nutritional research is being largely neglected, despite the relatively low cost involved.

Article Abstract:

Experiments on homologous recombination that examined the crystal structure of RecA indicate that a 20-amino-acid protein from RecA can imitate some of the functions of the complete protein. Its activity in mediating DNA strand exchange is discussed.
