Battling concrete corrosion
Article Abstract:
Electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) and realkalization have seen wider use because they attack the causes of concrete corrosion and not just its symptoms. Normally, the alkalinity of the cement paste ECE protects rebars from corrosion through a thin oxide film on the surface of the steel. However, chloride ions from deicing salts or ocean water destroy the film and corrode the rebar. ECE controls corrosion by removing the chloride ions that trigger corrosion. Realkalization checks carbonation by raising the pH value of concrete.

Steel or concrete arch likely for Hoover Dam bypass
Article Abstract:
The Federal Highway Administration is almost through with the environmental impact statement for the Hoover Dam Bypass Project. The latter calls for the construction of five bridges, 3.5 miles of roads and a 300-ft tunnel. To be built at a cost of $198 million, the project will relieve traffic congestion and improve safety on US Highway 93, which goes around Hoover Dam. The centerpiece of the project is a 1,900 ft four-lane bridge across the Colorado River to be built 1,500 ft downstream from the dam.
