Historical input and degradation of toxaphene in Lake Ontario sediment
Article Abstract:
Toxaphene is deposited to Lake Ontario sediment from the Niagara River and the atmosphere, and degradation slowly takes place after deposition. This was determined by analyzing total toxaphene concentrations in eight sediment cores in Lake Ontario using electron capture gas chromatographic mass spectrometry. The objective is to test predictions that toxaphene inputs into the environment should have maximized between 1972 and 1978. Results showed that toxaphene maximized in Lake Ontario sediment sometime in 1973.

Is the Hyde Park Dump, near the Niagara River, still affecting the sediment of Lake Ontario?
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to assess whether the Hyde Park Dump near the Niagara River is still affecting th sediment of Lake Ontario 21 years after the dumpsite was closed down in 1975. Core burdens and concentration profile data show that the concentrations of three fluorinated compounds in the surficial sediments are still around 20% of their maximum. The high levels are attributed to the tandem of physical perturbations in the lake and continued migration of the compounds from the dumpsite.

Toxaphene in Great lakes fish: a temporal, spatial, and trophic study
Article Abstract:
Toxaphene concentrations in Lake Superior have not decreased over time, and assumptions are that there is a specific source loading the chemical into Lake Superior or that the rate of the chemical's removal from the lake is slower than in other Great Lakes. Toxaphene is a mixture of chlorinated norbornanes and norbonenes whose use as an insecticide in the US has been banned by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1982.
