Hubble successor gathers support

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and Beyond panel has proposed a plan for the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST), a $500 million orbiting infrared observatory. The NGST's eight-meter, eight-segment reflector will be able to show galaxies forming in the first billion years after the big bang.

Fusion plan gathers steam
Article Abstract:
The administration has proposed a $21-million budget increase over 1996 for fusion research, which had been cut from $366 million in 1995 to $244 million. The request is enough to keep the Tokamak Fusion test Reactor operating, but requests the program be closed if the total is not approved.

Investing in the future

The government should not reduce funding for scientific and engineering research as a part of its deficit reduction plan. Research is an investment, not unnecessary consumption. Scientific discoveries made today will solve tomorrow's economic, health and environmental problems.
