Hydrologic and microbiological factors affecting persistence and migration of petroleum hydrocarbons spilled in a continuous-permafrost region

Article Abstract:

An analysis of groundwater flow in the vicinity of the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory near Barrow, AK, and near the Imikpuk Lake detected several contaminants, especially petroleum hydrocarbons, that came from fuel spills in the vicinity. These contaminants are suggested to pose risks to the safety and health of residents who use the lake as water source. Hydrologic and microbiological evaluation of the airstrip showed the persistence of contamination due to the shallow permafrost. Contaminants entered the lake ecosystem by subsurface migration from the permafrost to the groundwater.

Traffic in women in Asia-Pacific

Article Abstract:

Globalization has changed the nature of female labor migration in the Asia-Pacific region where women migrate from the poorer to richer countries. Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan have accepted workers from Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia, countries with large and growing labor forces. However, poverty, unemployment and ineffective labor laws have contributed to the growth of traffic in women in the region. Women suffer all forms of exploitation and human rights violations even if they choose to migrate voluntarily.
