Hydrostatic ironing - analysis and experiments
Article Abstract:
A fluid-pressure assisted hydrostatic ironing process for thinning the walls cup shaped products is presented. The process involves surrounding the outside surfaces of the cup with a confining liquid pressure to control the frictional shear brought on by the punch to the workpiece and to push the outside edge of the wall through extrusion. The parameters involved in the process including the various fluid pressures are analyzed using lower and upper bound solutions. The experimental application of the process is also described.

Friction behavior in the cup ironing process of aluminum sheets
Article Abstract:
The surface flattening mechanism in the cup ironing process is investigated based on the friction and lubricating mechanism. Experiments were conducted on aluminum cups with varying lubricant viscosities and ironing reductions using a new drawing-ironing test apparatus. Results show that the die surface and friction coefficient becomes minimum for certain lubricant viscosities and ironing thickness. The best condition for cup surface flattening is when the minimum friction coefficient is observed.

A possibility of 1/f evaluation on surface finishes based on fluctuation behavior
Article Abstract:
An optical evaluation method for engineering surfaces based on fluctuation properties is presented. The method is based on the 1/f property wherein the optical power spectrum is proportional to the inverse spatial frequency. Turned surfaces machined under different cutting conditions are studied using the optical Fourier transformation. The power spectrum obtained is used to determine the fluctuation behavior. Textures with 1/f and 1/f(super 1.5) behavior are acceptable profiles of surface finish.
