Instruments in the history of astronomy
Article Abstract:
A special session was dedicated on the history of instruments during the Fourth Biennial History of Astronomy Workshop at the University of Notre Dame in July 1999. Rice University's Albert Van Helden highlighted the differences between performances of instruments by Giuseppe Campani and Eustachio Divini using a fascinating story of contests or "paragoni" staged between telescope makers in 17th-century Italy. The colorful career of Dobsonian reflector's designer John Dobson was traced by Steve Turner of the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution.

George Eliot, Charles Darwin and the labyrinth of history
Article Abstract:
Both Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" and George Eliot's "Middlemarch" viewed history as nonteleological, contingent and interconnected. In "On the Origin of Species," Darwin professed that living organisms have only history but no origin. He believed natural selection progressed strictly and solely on individual organisms as they are at the moment. Eliot's "Middlemarch," subtitled "A Study of Provincial Life," states that our immediate and self-protective knowledge of human relations is contrary with an objective narrative.
