Interpreting, correlating, and predicting the multimedia concentrations of PCDD/Fs in the United Kingdom
Article Abstract:
This U.K. study examined polychlorinated dioxin and furans levels in fresh water, soil, river sediment, plants, sludge, and human adipose tissue to determine levels of human exposure. Accumulating such data is complicated by environmental factors. Adjusting the means of analysis based on the source of the samplings (air, water, and sediment) became a key element of the research. The means of media-specific adjustment factors is shown to be an effective prediction tool. The resulting methodology showed an unexpectedly high level of dioxin and furans in the environment.

Persistence of PCDD/Fs in a sludge-amended soil
Article Abstract:
An analysis of sludge-derived polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) based on their content shows that PCDD/F persistence in soils has gradually decreased from 1972 to 1990. Measurement of the contamination profile of PCDD/Fs in soils show a 50% decrease in the concentration of the congeners over the period of 18 years. This decrease is attributed in large part to the reduction in half-lives of PCDD/Fs in soils due to physical loss or the decrease in extractability.

Role of sulfur in reducing PCDD and PCDF formation
Article Abstract:
The combustion of wastes is the major source of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), major environmental pollutants that pose serious harm to human and animal health. It has been suggested that sulfur (S) inhibits PCDD and PCDF formation. Experiments testing this hypothesis show that the presence of S can be effective in reducing emissions from combustion sources by preventing the formation of PCDD, PCDF, and their analogs.
