Isomer distributions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans formed during de novo synthesis on incinerator fly ash
Article Abstract:
A laboratory scale study conducted with activated carbon on fly ash as the origin of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans formation indicated that the isomer distributions within homologues were independent of the reaction time for de novo formation. This indicates that de novo formation of PCDD/F cannot explain thermodynamically controlled isomer distributions in incinerators. As a result, arguments both in favor and against thermodynamic control of isomer distributions within homologues during de novo formation are expected to prevail.

Reactions of dibenzofuran and 1,2,3,4,7,8-hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin on municipal waste incinerator fly ash
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the reactions of dibenzofuran and 1,2,3,4,7,8-hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin on fly ash found in municipal incinerators. Simultaneous chlorination and dechlorination were measured by using a hexachlorodibenzodioxin. The chlorination of dibenzofuran was found to produce all possible polychlorinated dibenzofuran cogeners. The chlorination reaction was found to be based on an electrophilic aromatic substitution mechanism.

Formation of PCDDs and PCDFs from anthracene and chloroanthracene in a model fly ash system
Article Abstract:
The formation characteristics of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) from anthracene and chloroanthracene in fly ash are investigated. The results show that PCDD and PCDF formation from anthracene reaches maximum level at 300 degrees celsius. After the formation from chloroanthracene, several other types of PCDDs and PCDFs were observed.
