Life and death decisions: ced-9 and programmed cell death in Caenorhabditis elegans
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that the ced-9 gene prevents cells from undergoing programmed cell death (PCD). The finding indicates that PCD probably originated before vertebrates separated from nematodes and that evolution probably conserved ced-9 and its entire pathway.

Programmed cell death in bacterial populations
Article Abstract:
Programmed cell death exists among bacterial populations and serves similar purposes to cell death in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Bacteria that encounter many stresses as a way of life use self-sacrifice as one means of survival.
