Light years ahead
Article Abstract:
The use of new materials for light sources has led to the development of high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, and neon tubes for side/indicator/brake applications in automobiles. The HID lamps provide more light output and spread that reduces eyestrain, and the absence of filaments ensure a longer life. Neon lights are more durable, shock-proof, function without any filament, and can be accommodated into any contour. Amber neon lights are available from Osram Sylvania for use as indicators. Xenon lamps from Hella Inc. are described.

First glass
Article Abstract:
The UK glass fiber industry, composed mainly of Owens Corning, PPG and St. Gobain, are striving to retain their market share in spite of the influx of other kinds of fibers. The two primary grades of glass used in composites are the E-glass and S-2 glass which compete against other fibers such as aramid, carbon and boron. To retain the upper hand, Owens Corning has developed the strongest fiber ever produced by the company. This is the ZenTron high-strength fiber.

Arrow head
Article Abstract:
The new Arrow double decker chassis from Dennis Specialist Vehicles in Guildford, England, allows the most number of passengers in double decker buses. This is mainly due to a highly rationalized low-weight, high-strength construction. The welded modular platform is made from steel channel and rectangular sections. A design gross weight of 16.8 tons with a typical kerb weight of only 10 tons adds to a very high payload capability.
