The global market for medical engineering services was estimated at over 44 billion pounds sterling in 1998 and is growing at 10%/y. The European market is put at 11.5 billion pounds sterling, of which the UK accounts for around 2.5 billion pounds sterling. The UK's medical engineering industry is diverse and comprises mainly small and medium-sized companies specialising in niche markets. The Biomaterials Partnership is being established in the UK to support the biomaterials industry and to inspire new research.

Computer-aided engineering simulation tools ease the virtual prototyping of new products and parts which can also be tested without the necessary physical models. The company, Ansys, is offering a simple graphical user interface which works with popularly used CAD programs called DesignSpace Enterprise. Tallent Engineering is using the Ansys finite element analysis package with direct connections to CAD packages such as Catia, SDRC's I-deas, Unigraphics and CADDS-5.

A number of subcontractors in the UK offer machining services for special materials. These include Dunblane Engineering which specializes in machining titanium and 310 stainless steel, GKN Defence whose specialty is welding and machining large 7000 Series aluminum ally billets and aluminum alloys for track armored vehicles and Hi-Tech Engineering which provides fine limit sheet metalwork and fabrication services.
