Measuring method for residual stresses in explosively clad plates and a method of residual stress reduction
Article Abstract:
A new layer removal technique for measurement of local residual stress through the thickness of clad plates was developed utilizing inherent strain which is a source of residual stress. The new technique was applied for the measurement of residual stresses in explosively clad plates of Ni/SUS304 and Zr/Zr/Ta/SUS304. Also, residual stresses remaining in a pipe joint piece cut from the explosively clad plate were estimated by an elastic analysis using inherent strain. The applicability of a mechanical stress reduction technique by using axial compressive load to the pipe joint piece, was shown by elastic-plastic finite element analysis.

Determination of biaxial residual stresses by a holographic-hole drilling technique
Article Abstract:
A method for rapidly calculating residual stresses through the combined application of hole drilling and holographic interferometry is shown. A small diameter blind hole is drilled into a part with residual stresses and the displacement field produced by localized stress relief is measured by holographic interferometry instead of a strain gage rosette. The optical interference fringe pattern produced in the hologram upon release of stress is studied by a fringe counting technique.
