Polycysteine and other polyamino acid functionalized microfiltration membranes for heavy metal capture
Article Abstract:
A polyethylene-silica membrane treated with polycysteine is used to remove and recover toxic heavy metals from aqueous solutions containing Pb (II), Hg(II), and Cd(II). The results are charted and compared to removal results when using plain silica and cellulose membranes.

Could flame retardants deter electronics recycling?
Article Abstract:
Stockholm University's Andreas Sjodin and colleagues report that when electronic goods are dismantled, they emit flame-retardant additives that are 2 to 3 times greater than the amount produced in other work environments. There are few regulations that cover flame-retardant chemicals, and some of these compounds tend to bioaccumulate. The article details the risks of exposure to the additives, which include polybrominated diphenyl ethers.
