Mechanisms controlling release of colloids to groundwater in a Southeastern coastal plain aquifer sand
Article Abstract:
The movement of colloids in a Southeastern Coastal Plain aquifer sand was shown to be dependent on a slightly alkaline pH to effect a movement partially representative of the bulk matrix. Acidic pH solutions and anionic surfactant solutions showed little colloid release from the packed sediment column. The movement of the colloid in the sediment column is thought to be dependent on the dissolution of the amorphous iron oxyhydroxide intermediaries which imparts a negative charge thereby forming repulsive forces that induces colloid movement through the sediment.

Laboratory assessment of BTEX soil flushing
Article Abstract:
A Midwestern waste site contaminated with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) exhibits kinetically limited desorption and non-aqueous phase liquid dissolution. BTEX soil flushing was used to assess which mechanisms inhibit flushing as a remediation approach at a particular field site for an evaluation of the efficiency of different cleanup methods. The method involves applying water at the surface of the soil and flushing vertically by gravity infiltration. Water would then be recovered using pumping wells and treated at the land surface.

Partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to marine porewater organic colloids
Article Abstract:
Marine porewater colloids can bind polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in interstitial waters, according to a recent study of organic colloids obtained from Boston Harbor, MA. The extent of binding, however, is dependant on the nature of the organic colloids present. Additionally, porewater colloids appear to be more effective stabilizers in sediments affected by human activity.
